What is the Magic Key Pass?

The Magic Key pass is the next evolution of the Disneyland Resort annual pass. Disney reports that the Magic Key offerings were widely shaped by “extensive consumer research and feedback from guests.”

There are four tiers to the Magic Key program, with most perks being very similar to the old Annual Pass program. The main difference is now Magic Key holders will need to make reservations for the theme parks in advance.

Magic Key pass holders also get extra perks such as up to 15% off select dining, up to 20% off select merchandise, access to Magic Key Terrace at Disney California Adventure, and occasional special offerings just for Magic Key holders.

One important difference between the old Disneyland Annual Pass and the new Magic Key pass is there are no more physical passes! You’ll get a digital pass in the Disneyland app. This can cause some stress when needing to hand your phone over for a dining discount, or when cell service dips out!

There are two potential solutions for this: 1) You can try your luck requesting a physical paper Magic Key pass from the Disneyland ticket booth. The cost is $20. I have heard varying degrees of success with this; however, the Magic Key fine print still says it’s an option.

The second option, 2) You can try printing out your Magic Key barcode and taping it to your old plastic Disneyland pass. I tried this and found some Cast Members would not accept it, especially front gate CMs. Your mileage may vary with this hack.

What are the Different Magic Key Pass Options and Prices?

There are four different levels of Magic Key passes available:  Inspire, Believe, Enchant, and Imagine. Inspire is the most expensive pass and offers the most benefits. Imagine is the lowest price and is available only for Southern California residents.

All four passes are valid for one calendar year after the first date of use, and California residents are entitled to a monthly payment plan.

Here are the major changes for Magic Key passes as they enter their third year:

  • New passes will not be on sale; only renewals for now.
  • All passes have a price increase.
  • The Dream Key is being phased out. The “top” pass will now be the Inspire Key.
  • All passes have blockout dates now. There is no more “365 day” pass.

Disney Replaces Disneyland Annual Passes with Magic Key

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park were closed from March 2020 through April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the parks were closed, Disneyland ended their long-running annual passport program and refunded current passholders.

In August 2021 Disneyland introduced the Magic Key passes, the annual pass replacement. The Magic Key passes work similarly to the old annual passes, but the benefits are slightly different. For one, Magic Key passholders now have to make theme park reservations before visiting.

What Happens When You Become a Magic Key Holder?

Besides having access to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure (with your park reservation made in advance), Disneyland Magic Key holders are entitled to special benefits such as included or discounted parking (depending on the Magic Key type) and discounts on food and merchandise.

There are also occasional special offerings for Magic Key holders, such as Magic Key Corner during certain festivals and Magic Key Appreciation Month, which took place in February 2023 and will likely return in 2024.

Are Magic Key Passes Worth the Money?

You may be wondering if purchasing a Magic Key may be a good value for you! This all depends on how often you visit the Disneyland Resort.

If you are a Southern California resident who likes to visit Disneyland during the week and don’t necessarily want to visit on the weekends or holidays, the Imagine Key may be a good value for you, considering it costs $499. Compare this to the current price of $169 for a Tier 0 one day park hopper ticket. If you visit more than three times a year, the Imagine Key is a really good value!

Another example: Let’s say you want the Inspire Key once it is available for sale. The Inspire Key price is $1649 with limited blockout days, which means you can visit most days as long as you make your reservation in advance. Compare this to the current price of $259 for a Tier 6 one day park hopper ticket. If you visit more than seven times in one year, your Inspire Key is a good value!
