Dear DWI,
Our Walt Disney World wedding is considered a destination wedding, because we not only live out of state but out of the country! We still want to set up a registry so we will get gifts that we actually want, but there’s no way we could lug a bunch of gifts back with us on the plane. Is it rude to ask for gifts cards, or specify we would like gifts sent to our home? And what would be the best way to go about it?

In this current day and age, destination weddings are becoming more and more popular. It is probably safe to assume that your guests don’t want to lug a vacuum cleaner on an airplane as much as you don’t want to figure out how to get it home. Chances are your guests are probably waiting for some kind of signal to find out what they should do. Here are some suggestions:
- The most etiquette-friendly way to make your gift wishes known is to spread the word through your parents and siblings. It’s widely considered to be tacky for the wedding couple to be involved with any conversations about gifts, so guests will likely not come to you and ask you outright but they may ask your parents or your closest family members/friends.
- If you are setting up a registry with a retail store, you can usually specify a preferred shipping address. Hopefully guests will take the hint and have the gift shipped directly to you.
- If you have a wedding website, include a page about your registry information. On here, you can also write something along the lines of, “If you are considering a gift, we request that they be sent to our home instead of brought to Walt Disney World.”
- If you are going on a honeymoon, a honeymoon registry is a great idea for a destination wedding. Honeymoon Pixie even has a sample WDW honeymoon registry to help get you started.
- Hopefully you won’t have to use it, but it’s good to be prepared with a backup plan just in case someone does bring large gifts to your wedding. See if a friend can arrange to get all your gifts to you, or see if the retail stores can do some kind of arrangement to get your items to you.
