Starbucks has released a very limited-time Unicorn Frappuccino, and while it’s visually amazing, let’s face it – it’s a sugar bomb. A Grande has 59 GRAMS OF SUGAR, YIKES! That’s over twice the daily recommended intake for sugar. Reports all around the Internet was that it was waaaaay too sweet. And generally all of Starbuck’s flavored drinks are too sweet for me and I have to ask for half-syrup as it is.
While looking at the Unicorn Frappuccino recipe on the app I got creative with ways I could possibly make it less sweet and – dare I say it – healthier. The end result – I AM IN LOVE!! I took a risk and WOW, it’s so so good! I can’t compare it to the standard recipe since this is my first version of the Unicorn Frappuccino but I’m so glad I modified it in this way. The blue sour drizzle was a nice surprise here and there; I didn’t find it to be too overpowering but it IS certainly sour.
Here’s How to Make Your Unicorn Frappuccino Healthier
Here’s what I did with a Grande Unicorn Frap:
Reduce the mango syrup by half (1 pump instead of 2)
Switch from whole milk to nonfat milk
No whipped cream
Add 1 banana
There’s no way to do this on the app (that I can tell), but you can also ask for “light” blue drizzle.
The Unicorn Frappuccino is vanilla creme based, so basically I ended up with a tropical tasting banana-mango smoothie. And while it’s still definitely sweet and not an “every day” drink, the banana helped tone it down tremendously.
The Unicorn Frappuccino is available in select Starbucks locations Wednesday April 19 through Sunday April 23. Have you tried it?
