Friends, this is what happens when I have a month and a half hiatus from Disneyland. I had no idea there was a dance party replacement for Mad T Party! And based on your responses on my Snapchat videos, I wasn’t alone. So I figured a blog post about it is in order.
The beloved Mad T Party ended its run in March 2016, despite the outcries from its hardcore fans. While I enjoyed Mad T Party, I didn’t consider myself a mega-fan of the band and entertainment. But I will never turn a night of dancing with my friends so I found myself at Mad T frequently. I had heard rumblings about a DJ-only show that was going to replace it, but once the area was being used for Food & Wine Fest in April the dance party slipped my mind.
However, this past weekend I was searching for Pokemon in DCA when I wandered into Hollywood Land and saw the signs for Jammin’ on the Backlot.
From Disneyland’s website:
You’re invited to an all-ages celebration ablaze with tasty bites, refreshing beverages and groove-worthy tunes.
This ultra-cool summertime shindig kicks off in the backlot of Hollywood Land at 6:00 PM—each and every evening—and rages on until park close. Fun, family-friendly features include:
- A DJ churning out upbeat music
- Disney-themed trivia
- Bubble machines and pulsating lights
- Face painting
- A picnic table area for lounging
- Lip-smacking eats like the BBQ bacon hot dog snacker on a stick, chili lime corn on the cobb, Mickey pretzel with cheese and a variety of chips
- Assorted alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
Please note: Entertainment and offerings are subject to change without notice. Guests must be 21 years of age or older to consume alcoholic beverages. A valid form of I.D. will be required to verify age.
I came across the dance party shortly after it started at 6pm so the sun was still out and it was still warm out. As I walked towards the music I saw a familiar face – DJ Wendy! She was up on stage looking super adorbs and mixing some family friendly jams. Between the two stages were rows of benches in the shade, heavily occupied with guests escaping the summer heat. There were also a handful of kids and a few adults dancing.
Towards the far end of the backlot, picnic tables were set up under the former “house of cards.” The picnic tables look very familiar … I’m guessing they were brought over from the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree area.
The bar has some new drink (still no wine!) and food offerings on the menu. The BBQ Bacon Hot Dog on a Stick seems to be a brand new item, and you can also get a classic Mickey Pretzel. On the other side of the picnic table is a food cart, offering additional menu items such as Tot-chos and soda slushes, and a face painting station.
As far as production level, Jammin’ on the Backlot is certainly a step down from Mad T Party and ElecTRONica. You can see the stage looks pretty sparse without all the Mad T props, but the giant LED video wall and club lighting remains. All in all, it’s nice to have some kind of dance party replacement going on during the summer. And while I was there during daylight, it seems the party does pick up a bit once the sun goes down, as seen in this video taken by Exploring the Magic.
Jammin’ on the Backlot will run every night from 6pm until close through September 5, 2016. What are your thoughts?
