Hello! Welcome to my Blogging and Income Report for July 2018! July had it’s ups and downs but mostly it feels like it went by really, really quickly. The second half of the year is always really busy and things are starting to pick up. While this wasn’t my best month ever, I’m starting to feel excited about what the rest of this year will bring!
Blogging and Income Report – July 2018
Starting with last months goals. I didn’t really set any major goals for July because I knew I was going on vacation for half the month. I worked really hard to get my blog and social platforms ready for when I was away and I’m pretty happy with everything I planned out. I was able to go on vacation and not worry to much about my blog and social pages, which is a great feeling. I had an awesome vacation!
Ooooh, what’s this color called again? It looks like green but it has been so long I can’t remember ….. yep, my numbers were back up for July! I’m so relieved.
My top referral sources for July are the usuals – Google, Pinterest, Direct traffic, Facebook, and Bing.
Other July Happenings
My big adventure in July was a 10 day road trip through California, leaving Los Angeles and going up to San Francisco and Napa Valley and back down again, with various stops on the way. Obviously taking a break from your business is never easy (in fact, we JUST recorded a podcast episode about this topic), but it was nice to take a break from the routine and explore a new part of our state with my husband.
Here’s what I earned in July 2018. I list the earnings by network, and then state the specific brands/shops in parenthesis. If I didn’t make any money through a specific affiliate channel, I will leave it off the list (all those zeros could get depressing)!
(Keep in mind I’m only sharing the revenue I generate through my websites and social media accounts.)
Affiliates (some of the links below contain my affiliate code)
Total revenue for July 2018 = $887.81.
– Total revenue the previous month = $1042.59.
– Difference: -$154.78
Another big drop in revenue this month, which I knew would happen since I was stepping away from my business for a while. My ad revenue always drops in July due to the quarters changing and hopefully it will go back up. As far as affiliate and brand revenue, August is already looking better than July.
I need to talk about one platform for a moment, and that is Shopstyle Collective. I’ve been with Shopstyle Collective for years, since the early days of my blog. They are an affiliate platform where you can create links for several different online retailers. I’ve used them for ShopDisney, Target, and Walgreens links that I place into articles. The reason I liked their platform is that they were PPC – pay per click. A few months ago, Shopstyle announced they would be switching to a CPA earnings structure, aka cost per acquisition. This meant that I wouldn’t be paid per click, I’d be paid when someone made a purchase. Now, I’m already in a lot of affiliate platforms that are CPA and the reason I liked Shopstyle was the PPC aspect. So, I avoided their emails to switch over until one day I couldn’t log into their dashboard unless I agreed to the new pay structure – which I did, reluctantly. Since then, my earnings have plummeted even though I haven’t changed the way I use their links on my end. I earned ZERO in July. And I really did make an effort. I dropped links everywhere.
Shopstyle has a $100 payment threshold, which means they won’t issue my money until my account earns $100. Right now I’m at $60 and I don’t see any possibility of me reaching $100 in the next decade. I emailed them for assistance and they won’t make an exception. This obviously is upsetting because A) I never wanted to switch payment structures; I was forced to switch if I wanted to access my account (basically I either switch or forfeit my earnings to date) and B) they care more about money than their clients. As you can see by reading my income reports, I struggle to bring in money with my full-time blog and every penny counts when you have bills to pay. Even though we went back and forth in several emails where I begged – something I’m not proud of – to release my money to me, they refused. They don’t care about bloggers and our bills. My last email to them was a week ago or so and they just stopped responding. And they know it would cost me more money to hire a lawyer than the payout value. The bottom line is they screwed me over and I’ll never see that money I worked so hard to earn.
In short – just stay away from Shopstyle Collective. I’m so upset over how they’ve treated me, I can’t in good faith recommend them to any blogger.
Things I need to work on:
I have high hopes for August! I plan to get a lot of side projects done, I want to up my promotion of our podcast (Rock Your Wedding Biz – please listen!), and get some more blog posts done for Joy Social.
That’s it for now! Thank you for reading. Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll try my best to answer! I also would like to know if the information I’m providing is helpful or what else you would want to see/learn from an income report. Let me know how I can help you! Have a great month, everyone!
