Our honeymoon cruise through the Mediterranean is creeping up on us, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. For the next 10 weeks leading up to our trip I’m going to highlight each stop on our cruise itinerary.
We are kicking things of with Venice, Italy.
We are spending two days in Venice to start our trip. Our flight arrives just before midnight on Thursday and we are staying the night at the Marriott by the airport, and then will take the train into Venice in the morning. We have the entire day to walk around Venice before boarding our ship in the afternoon. Rumor has it there’s a place by the port where we can store our luggage for a small fee. Our ship is staying put in Venice that night, so we also have all of Saturday morning to explore the city.
The one thing I want to do in Venice, obviously, is go on a gondola ride through the canals. The main tourist spot seems to be St. Marks Square, so we will go there as well I’m sure. It would also be wonderful to find a nice little cafe by the water to sip wine and eat canolis. My friend and frequent blog conference roommate Caroline suggested a cafe called Cafe del Doge for good espresso, so that will be a must-experience for Friday morning (and maybe Saturday as well).
Out ship sets sail at 2pm on Saturday, and I’ve read that the Venice locals put on quite a festival any time a ship comes in or out of the city. We have a rear balcony room so hopefully we will have a really good view of everything.
Speaking of our ship – we are sailing on the Carnival Sunshine. The ship is being refurbished and actually changing its name. The ship used to be the Carnival Destiny. It is getting a “fun ship” overhaul, and as far as I can tell it just means more bars and more waterslides. This video was recently released, taking us on a virtual tour of the Sunshine.
I’m a little worried about sailing Carnival after our amazing time on the Disney cruise, but we are really doing this cruise for the itineraries and not for the ship itself. Although I’m sure I will still wonder why Captain Mickey and Sailor Donald aren’t greeting me every time I step back onto the ship.
