Happy Monday, peoples!  WOW, I haven’t done a tutorial in months so I’m super duper excited to be posting this one for you all.  Not only was it super easy to do but this is the kind of DIY that really makes people “ooh” and “aah” and will really make a statement in your wedding photos.

When I first started planning our wedding, I found these personalized bridal gown hangers were all the rage.  I wanted one but wasn’t sure I needed to shell out the $20-$30 to have one made on Etsy.  One day I was chatting around with a fellow bride right here on the internet and she told me she made her own using floral wire! *head smack moment*  Brilliant!  So I set out to try my own using supplies from local crafts stores like Michael’s or Joann Fabric.

Supplies:

  • Floral craft wire, I used 12 gauge like the kind shown here on Amazon, but for goodness sake, you don’t need 100 feet of it unless you plan on making hangers for a small army.  You can get smaller amounts at your local craft store.
  • Pliers
  • Wooden hanger (If you have a strapless dress, make sure you get a hanger with the little notches in it to hold the little hanging loops.)
  • Drill (not pictured)
  • Super glue (not pictured)
  • A handyman fiance (not pictured)
  • Step One:  Unroll a bit of wire and start shaping!  Per the advice of my friend, I printed out a guide using a cursive font.  The font I used was simply called “Cursive.”

FULL DISCLOSURE: I made two attempts at shaping my letters, because I didn’t totally love the first one I did.  But after making the second one, I liked the first one better.  Go figure.  Here’s the thing about this project … unless you are Martha Stewart herself, your wire words are probably not going to look as polished and perfectly aligned as the pros on Etsy.  But, I like that I made my own, I think that makes it special, not to mention I spent around $5 on this project instead of $30.

Step Two: Get your handyman fiance to drill two tiny holes into the bottom inner portion of your hanger, to attach the wire to the hanger.  Alternative option: Just wrap the wire around the bottom portion of the hanger.

As you prepare for this step, be sure to cut off more wire than you think you’ll need.  I probably snipped off the ends of my wire 5 or 6 times as I was fitting it into the holes.  Remember you can always cut the wire off but you can’t add it back on if it’s too short!

Step Three: Once you have the wire at the proper length, use a small bit of super glue on the end of the wire and insert it into the drilled holes on each side. Hold it in place a few seconds until it dries.  Your wire hanger will still be very delicate so be careful handling it!

Step Four: Decorate!  You can tie a bow around the hook part of the hanger, use a paint pen to write your wedding date or location along the side of the hanger, or straight up bedazzle the hanger.  I chose to attach one of my world famous fabric flowers to give my hanger a bit of color.

There you have it!  This was a really easy tutorial and I would love to see if some of you try it.  Don’t be intimidated by the shaping of the wire!  You can make it as small or as big as you want!  I have seen some hangers that simply read “BRIDE” really big.  YOU CAN DOO EEET.
